Mr. Harmonica Man

brendan-power-performing.jpg

Professional harmonica player Brendan Power has been playing the harmonica for 35 years, accumulated nearly 300 harmonicas in the process, of which he carries around 30 or so, and plays 10-15 of them on his gigs. He also has an enviable CV, having worked with notable artists like Sting and John Williams, as well as contributions to movie soundtracks such as the Academy Award-winning "Atonement" and "Love, Actually."

This masterful musician was in the country for a few days to share his wealth of knowledge and do what he does best -- perform.

MYXph was present at the harmonica music clinic organized by JB Music at 70s Bistro last Wednesday with special performances from Mr. Harmonica Man himself. Backed by Kakoy Legaspi (guitar), Francis Magat (bass), and Reli De Vera (drums), Power showcased his skill and versatility on pieces ranging from pop, blues and jazz, to the traditional Irish music -- at times earthy and mellow, other times upbeat and eclectic. Joining him on stage for his final performance were blues artist and harp/harmonica player Ronnie Badilla, Tom Colvin of Blues Asia Network, and Paul Marney Leobrera of the Blue Rascals.

Since releasing his "Wriggle and Writhe" album with Tim Edey, nominated for Best Duo at the upcoming BBC2 British Folk Awards, Power has embarked on a tour in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. As it was his first time in the Philippines, MYXph asked about his experience so far and which harmonica holds more sentimental value than others. Fresh off India, Power described Indians as exuberant and with great energy, meanwhile, the Filipinos, he says, "seem a little bit more chilled out, sort of reserved." He adds, "I quite like it because I came from a culture that's very reserved like England. And the food is great!"
