THE VERY FIRST

A lot of music purists and critics would say that it’s the songs that make the artist, while fans would rebut that it’s a combination of the artist, their music and hard work that serves as the 1-2-3 combo to notoriety. ‘The Very First’ hopes to beat most bands to the punch and hopefully make their mark in their music corner soon, ding! ding! ding!

With a highly saturated scene of bands and artists that were influenced by the band explosion of the 90's and young groups coming out of the woodwork inspired by the emo-craze of late, what makes ‘The Very First’ different from the others?

Ael Tandoc (Lead Vocals, Guitarist & Chief Songwriter) answers “Kung meron mang isang thing siguro na medyo distinct from our sound, it’s the songwriting and the clean tones”

The Very First’s beginnings started in 2009 when the band’s name was still ‘Jael Trio’, an alternative-pop rock-blues independent band who would always get invited to bar productions until they caught a break and was invited to play on Music Uplate Live (ABS-CBN). The band was also active online because it was a channel to promote themselves and their music. That was the usual routine until…

The changes started when the band’s resident drummer had to take an indefinite leave to accept a session job abroad, the trio almost became a duo.

Ael narrates “It was quite a challenge to look for a new drummer na medyo pasok sa tugtugan namin until naisip ko na meron pala akong officemate who also played the drums. nag-decide kami na subukan ‘sya.”

Moby Aragones, Ael’s officemate had his brush with bands before, playing drums in a few, and also singing lead vocals for one. It didn’t really workout for him so he left the scene and concentrated in writing songs, which was very fruitful. He has since written songs for artists like Toni Gonzaga, Kyla and also winning an Awit Award in 2010.

Something clicked on the evening of the audition/rehearsal session with Moby which lead him to earn the permanent position. “It was a perfect fit!” Tres Dalandan (Bassist) commented.

The band kept playing as ‘Jael Trio’ in production gigs until the end of 2010 and evaluated band matters by January 2011. “Changes were already happening in the band. Nagbago na yung sound. The arrangements were way different from 2 years ago. We were on a new direction”

So with a leap of faith and love for music, the band christened themselves ‘The Very First’. A name suggested by Ael and Moby’s officemate, Groove Nation DJ, Mario Serrano.

The Very First’s originals is a buffet of power-pop songs that you can rock out and groove along to. Titles are “Sabi-Sabi”, “Paano Sasabihin”, “Here Beside Me”, “Isip”, “Never Will I”, “Overtime” and “Overnight”.

If it is true that it is a combination of the artist, their music and hard work that makes up an act then ‘The Very First’ deserves a decent listen.
